International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2023

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February and recognized by UNESCO to promote multilingualism.

We welcome you to celebrate IMLD with us at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre with activities hosted by community and language groups.

Join us for a parade and laying of flower wreaths, an art exhibition, cultural performances, live music, a book fair, multicultural food vans, free kid’s activities and more!

More about the Mother Tongue Public Artwork at Tarneit Community Learning Centre:

Wyndham City Council proudly supported the creation of the “Wyndham Mother Tongue Public Artwork”. The initial idea for creating this public artwork was instigated by the Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation (YBCF) to commemorate martyrs from the Bangla Language Movement on 21 February 1952 in Bangladesh.

Following discussions with the VBCF and other community stakeholders, it was agreed it was important to expand the concept of the project to one that engaged with the broad theme of the preservation of Mother Language and representation of language diversity for all cultures in Wyndham.

We are excited to invite you to celebrate “International Mother Language Day-IMLD 2023”. Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation (VBCF) and Wyndham City Council have been celebrating IMLD since 2017.Mother Language Day is an International day celebrating multiculturism.  Celebration of IMLD is a milestone event for all language lovers in Victoria.

Event Date: Saturday 25 February 2023

Location: Tarneit Community Learning Centre( 150 Sunset Views Blvd, Tarneit - VIC3029)

Event Program Schedule:

11.00 am: Welcome to the country and Parade with Flower Wreath at Mother Tongue Artwork.

12.00pm to 1.00pm: National anthem and VIP guest speech

1.00pm to 5.00pm: Multicultural Performance by different language community groups.

The aim of this event is to celebrate IMLD 2023 with a wider community by engaging bilingual community language schools/organizations/groups in Victoria. The event includes a featuring Parade with the laying of flower wreaths, art exhibition, cultural performances, live music, book fair, multicultural food vans, free kid's activities, and many more by different multicultural community groups.
